Bolden was the head football coach at Prairie View A&M from 1973 to 1981. He led the Panthers to three Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships and four bowl games. In 1975, Bolden was named the SWAC Coach of the Year.

After leaving Prairie View A&M, Bolden served as the athletic director at Texas Southern University from 1982 to 1991. He was also the interim head football coach at Texas Southern in 1986.
